Free Will: Illusory

by E. L. Wright - Capricorn

Liberate me –
Release me from my cage.
Like the tiger I pace,
Snarling
Spitting
All I want to do is tear at
Those inexpressive faces,
Peering and probing me
With their unfeeling gaze.
Their eyes are coal
No depth
No light
Impenetrable.
Like some grotesque parody
Of living beings they enforce their will
With a steel resolve.
I need to run
Escape
God –
Help me, release me,
Give me the thread
And rip me from this labyrinth.

But I fear
Loneliness,
Mediocrity,
I could explode with the craving
To be another
Perfect face,
Perfect Body.
I want out of this shell of a being.
Carve me in alabaster then
Leave me to rot,
Put the statue on display,
A warning to any child
Who assumes dreams are reality.
To believe in fate is to believe
There is a purpose
In this mad throng.
I refuse to be a puppet in life’s theatre –
I play a part in it against my will.

Reason for writing:

The disillusion of the typical Jacobean Tragedy was my main inspiration for this, after reading a quote I liked from Webster's 'Duchess of Malfi'. Sometimes I just felt the need to break out - everyone feels trapped and alone in life sometimes - this was my way of expressing it. Comments and constructive criticism VERY welcome!
