until night returns...

by Bedwyr Mclean - Leo

I can hear them,
as i lay in a strange bed,
terrified of opening my eyes,
because of what i might see,
I've seen them before, I know what they want,
Demons,
at my window,
trying to get in,
so they can tear into my flesh,
why,
won't they leave me alone,
foolishly,
stupidly,
my eyelids part,
I see their eyes, they've been waiting,
terrible,
glowing lke coals, burning through my soul,
from the deepest pits of hell, open the window, they say,
why won't they leave me alone,
sharp, stained, filthy claws,
scatching at my window,
I can barely breathe, come out and play, they say
nobody will believe me,
a child's imagination, they say,
an induced hallucination, they say,
side affect of your medication, they say,
go back to sleep, they say,
but i know the truth,
they've been waiting,
a poet's soul, they say,
tastes the sweetest, especially one so young,
so very young,
can't you hear their drums,
beating for the sacrifice,
thirsting for blood,
they're getting desperate now,
anxious,
tearing at the pane, screaming at me to open the window,
leaving clawmarks in the glass,
I make peace with myself,
prepared for the end,
then, the sun,
rising,
forces them to seek refuge,
among the vile garden,
they call home,
and I am spared,
until,
night,
returns.......
