Once there was a young girl. Above all, the girl prized her strength and pride. But these things had left her, and the girl was scared and confused. What was she without these things?
So she left her home, forgetting her mother and father instantly. She walked and walked, and it grew cold. Shivering and lost, the girl sat down under the light of the moon. She looked to her left and saw a straight, dark path with few turns – and she realized this to be her past. Then she looked to her right and saw a narrow path full of sharp curves, but there shone a steady light. She recognized this to be her future.
And the girl sat, confused and cold, and stared to the moon. She wondered what it would be like to die; she wondered if she should. So she looked to the moon and pleaded silently.
“Mother, which path do I take?” And the moon just smiled. So the girl repeated her question.
“Mother, which path do I take?” Again, the moon simply smiled. By this time, the girl was angry with the moon. She asked her question one more time.
“Mother, which path do I take?!” And as the girl clutched herself and fought tears, the moon answered.
“My daughter, you have already chosen your path.” And she realized it was so, for why else would the moon smile upon her in blessing?
As she walked back to her home, she felt strange. Nothing looked the same as before. She could still feel the moon upon her back. Then the girl realized, that even though her feet had taken her to the left – to her home, her heart had continued on to the right – to her future. And she had her strength.
