Ode to Unborn Child

by Chelle Wood - Cancer

I feel your heart beat
My blood flows through your veins,
and I wonder at the miracle of this life that grows inside me
Will you wear blue jeans and baseball caps
and play with trucks and climb trees?
Or will you wear frilly dresses trimmed in lace
and have tea parties?
Boy or girl
It doesn't matter
I know I will love you
I already do...
Will you have hair like spun gold
with eyes the color of the morning sky?
Will your hair be dark as midnight
with eyes as green as the sea?
Or will your hair be red, bright as a copper penny?
Hazel or brown
It doesn't matter
I know I will love you
I already do...
When you are born
will you be perfect,
with ten fingers, ten toes?
Will you crawl and run and jump?
Will your smile light up a room?
Will you brighten a day with your laughter?
Hugs and kisses
It doesn't matter
I know I will love you
I already do...
I feel you kick inside me,
strong and determined
And I wonder who you will be
Will you be a pilot
or a ballerina?
Will you protect all from harm
or will you build things with your hands?
Teacher or healer
It doesn't matter
I know I will love you
I already do...
I feel your heart beat
and I know I will love you
I already do...
