Winter

by Chelle Wood - Cancer

Snow falls to cover
the ground with a pristine
blanket of white.
Animals leave their tracks,
forming hodgepodge trails
from which they came,
to where they go.
The snow weighs
heavily on the
boughs of firs and pines,
burdening their branches.
Cardinals and Blue Jays
swoop in and out of evergreens,
chasing each other
over the drifts.
Children skate on
an icy pond
and build snowmen,
and make snow angels,
and make barricade walls
to guard against the
onslaught of snowballs.
Their laughter rings through the air
as they toboggan down
a wintry slope.
Wood smoke scents the air
as it curls through the
top of the chimney to
get lost in the
brisk breeze,
wafting to
the tips of the trees.
The smell of hot cocoa
tantalizes the senses
as you race in
to warm your numbed
fingers and toes
by the fire.
The air is hush and still
as evening falls
across the frozen land.
Winter has arrived~
