He lived in a community with others that were considered to be much like he. During the day he walked about town, and the aides at the home let him be. Always smiling. He sat on the corner, with his radio on his shoulder, listening to the baseball game. The youth would taunt. The adults glance in pity. But everyone around knew his name. Always smiling. He would come home at dusk, undress to his scivies, roll his pants and shirt to a ball. He would lay down his head on his "pillow" to sleep, and dream without worry at all. Always Smiling. He decided to take his walk at night this time, under Winter's unforgiving sky. He undressed to his scivies, rolled up his pillow, then layed down in the field to die. In Heaven He IS. Still Smiling.
Reason for writing:
I am a nurse at a local doctor's office. Roy was one of my favorite patients. He was mentally retarded. It broke my heart when they found him after he had gone missing for 48 hrs. He had gotten confused when he was out walking, and apparently thought that he was at home getting ready for bed. He froze to death in that field. Roy was one of the happiest people I had ever met. No matter what anyone said to him (we all know how cruel people can be), he would always have this beautiful smile on his face. I only hope that he is looking down from heaven and that he knows he has touched many lives. Mine included. We miss you Roy!
