places of supplication

Places of Supplication

Puddles on dirty cobblestones
Wore films of spent rainbows.
Clouds rested on rooftops and
Tear-streaked windows misted.
Dejected curs sniffed the air and
A rag tag army of washing hung
On balconies. Sunday morning
Silence broken by church bells,
Subdued voices and slamming
Car doors of the faithful going to
Mass. Unseen, in doorways and
Under arches, restless men with
Tormented eyes waited for the bar
To open and release them from
The agony of their lonely inferno
