independences daze

INDEPENDENCES DAZE

SHE WORE A LONG SLEEVED TURTLE NECK AND BLUE JEANS
Sitting at the picnic
Clutching a beer in her hand
Thru painted black ray-bans
She watches the firecrackers
CRACK!

She flinches
She cries, and
SMACK!

He wore a flack jacket, and booney hat
His pant leg tied in knot at the knee
Vibrant flashes splashed an ominous light on his black canvas eye patch
His head tilted back in oblivion
He visions a muddy stream winding thru a bamboo forest
Holding a dark eyed baby underneath a dead girl
He begs in silence,
Quite baby, quite
SILENCE SCREAMS!
QUITE THE BABY NOW!
CRACK!

He flinches
The baby cries, and
SMACK!

Back ally doctors office past midnight
Her husband off too war
Father of her unborn child has gone
Back to his wife
Money in the surgeons hands
Makes it difficult to hold the knife
The cops at the door
CRACK!
He flinches
She cries, and
SMACK!

Memorial Day
A hospital room
A baby is born
But her husband is familiar with the darkness in his son’s eyes
The nurse cradles the dead infants flesh
She turns her back
Mother cries father morns

Till the fourth day of July
Twelve a.m.
A bottle of jack to celebrate the day
He finds his wife's old diaries in a box with his Green Beret
He reads
“A crack at the door”
“A slip of the knife”
He blames her for the dead children that haunt his dreams
So he drags his wife by her neck
Into his nightmare!
Her cries lost in pain
“Sorry” he says
Placing on the bed
A LONG SLEEVED TURTLENECK AND BLUE JEANS.
