Soldiers of War

by Rogue - Sagittarius

I feel his presence all around me
I hold his dog tags so I do not forget
Only half a heart remains,
That would be whole if he had
Not been taken from me
Proudly we fought that day
Fighting for our freedom and our country,
Unseeing of the death that awaited him.
I hear the sergeant yell, "TAKE COVER,INCOMING!!"
And as if everything was happening in slow motion
I turn to see a bullet rip through his chest.
He falls with a thud mixing dirt with his blood.
I hear myself yelling, "MEDIC!!"
I tear off one of my sleeves and press it to his wound
I yell again, "MEDIC!!" but still help does not come.
Blood starts to seep from his mouth,
And his breath is slow and thready.
I feel helpless while trying to stay low to avoid
The bullets littering the sky.
He takes my hand and says,
"I am not afraid, I am ready to go."
I fell the silent tears running down my face.
With his last breath he says,
"I will love you from this life to the next."
And with those words his soul leaves his body.
I lay my head on his chest,
Tears flowing freely, whispering,
"From this life to the next."
The bullets stop and the war is ended
I bring him home where soldiers are laid to rest
As I stand in full uniform at his grave,
I glance at the others that have come to pay respect
To this man that gave his life for his country.
Amazing Grace how sweet the sound
Sings him to heaven with full honor
But with every note that is played on that lone bugle
I feel a part of me dying, not wanting to live
My heart is half empty and so is my soul
I already miss him only he made me whole
I am snapped from my reverie when the
Priest says, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,"
And the final not of that sweet song is played.
The flag is folded and bestowed unto me.
All I hear is "On behalf of the President....
I see the soldier's lips moving but no sound
Is coming forth
Taps fills my ears as the shots are heard
Echoing through the trees.
I look at the soldiers' gathered around
Saluting their own with tear flowing from their eyes.
And only then do my warm tears stream down my face,
While clutching the precious flag of rememberance.
The honor is given and I am finally left alone
Standing where he sleeps.
It is done and he is in peaceful rest
If only I could I would retire my gun
But I will keep fighting for my
Freedom and for my country,
I know that is what he would want.
I gently lay a red rose on his casket,
Only hearing the last words that he said to me,
"I will love you from this life to the next."
Those words continually run through my mund as
I take one last look at what was not meant to be.
As I take that long walk back to society
I know that I will not love anyone like I loved him.
And from this life to the next I will love
Him for all eternity.

Reason for writing:

This is to honor all those that have lost
their lives defending our country and those
they left behind.
