Kills the prince

by Jess - Cancer

In the park the ducks are dead at the bottom of the pond.
It’s the last place you’d expect to find a princess.

She’s built herself a tree house,
snug between branches. The sun slips through her hair
and her eyes are sly,
fox sees and does and lives.
This is the princess and her castle is in the trees.

When the prince comes she lets down her long hair.
He wraps it round his fingertips and sucks on it.
Unknown to him, she has brushed poison into her sun-spun mane
and as he twists it tighter and tighter
round his fingers, round his tongue,
he all of a sudden is choking.
The handsome prince coughs and splutters
and the princess lies down in the pond,
and floats with the dead ducks for a while.
