Before I go to bed at night, I wander I check the doors and all the windows the darkness under beds and in the closets securely locked away from sight the silence in my house seems so expectant and all the whispers, the stealthy shadows they crowd themselves outside my bedroom door and in the hallway, I can hear them the phantom footsteps begin their nightly patter I hear them through the heavy silence I know they've come to life again and when they wake me up much later I look for them without fruition I try in vain to face them down but they conceal themselves so well inside my secrets until I find myself inside the darkness the part of me that is my nighttime the part of me I do not know.
