Coverings

by Elizabeth Olsen - Gemini

You tell me to do what feels right.
Then you tell me not to.
Sometimes I just don’t get you.
You don’t give me enough credit.
I can make my own choices,
Without you by my side
At all times.

You tell me not to judge a book by its cover.
Then turn around and do it.
You tell me love is okay.
You say beauty is only skin deep.
But when love finds me,
Its cover is the wrong color.
It’s the wrong color of love.

When you found love
Did it matter what they looked like?
Did it matter what others thought?
No.
You loved the person for who they were.
And not for what color their cover was.
You didn’t care.

But when I talk about my love,
Whatever color it may be.
You say its wrong.
It can never be.
You say that’s not what you suppose to do.
That’s not who you are suppose to love.
Is this some religion that has a spouse already for me?

Can’t I make my own decisions?
Love who I want to love,
Without you judging us?
There is one thing I will remember from you.
Maybe you should try to remember it too.
Never ever judge a person on the color of their skin,
But on the love that they give to you.
