Shoebox of memories

by chritty - Aries

a little girl sits on her bed holding a teddy bear
given to her by a woman thats no longer there
it’s the middle of the night and she cant seem to fall asleep
its her nineth birthday and she feels left alone
her father came in from work and went to sleep
after the party
she could hear her brothers in the living room playing nintendo
she quietly bends down and searches under her bed
it is still there
an old shoebox trimmed in red velvet lace
inside the woman had placed
three cards, a ring , and some tickets to the little girl’s third grade play
the little girl looks sadly at the box she opens it up and inside
there is a card for her eighth birthday, a card for valentines day and one just
to say hi, a bar of dove soap is wrapped up in a paper towel
the little girl picks it up and holds it close to her nose
takes a deep breath and inhales the fragrance
her mother use to smell like this
she liked to snuggle up to her and breath the sweet fragrance
a little gold ring with a red ruby lies at the very bottom
she promised that she would keep it forever
her mother left and this is what made her remeber she once loved her
in this little box were all the memories she had
a tear rolled down her cheek and she started to cry
mommy why did you leave why
she hugs her teddy bear tight
and places everything back in her box
and slides it under her bed
where it will be safe she walks
into her father’s room and kisses him on the forehead
he is sleeping she giggles at how funny his moustache looks with he
breathes out his nose
the little hairs move and
he opens his eyes when he hears her speak
honey bee what is it he ask her
he notices her tear streaked cheeks
daddy why did she leave
he hugs her tight
she puts her little teddy bear in his arms
and tells him thanks for staying
