A Distant Word

A Distant Word

Aunt - a word akin to can't-
Can't see her too often
Better stop by mom's
Can't call her too much
Need to talk to my friends
Can't borrow that cup of sugar
The store is much closer
Maybe I'll send her a card
"My God" they're $3.95 these days
She's really just close to mom
Or, maybe she's closer to dad
Isn't she just married-in, anyway
Who really knows......
Maybe a picture
Yes, a picture
Plenty left from sometime ago
I'll send one or two of the children
And the husband,
I've gained a bit of weight
Don't photograph too well just now
She lives so far away
Really don't have much in common anymore
Can't she see
Husband, home and family -
That's where I spend my time
Her life - it really must be full enough
Her cards alway have so much to say
Those other nieces....Why,
She even sends me pictures of them
And of their little ones...
She just lives too very far away
Can't make the drive
Can't get to her today

Reason for writing:

I was planning to write one of those sweet things to a niece who treats me very well, but what came was a picture of my neglect of my aunts. A situation I will correct PDQ.
