Yesterday's Friend

by Rima - Leo

I remember our first encounter
I was the new kid on the block
You acted gruff, but you didn't
scare me
nor did you fool me,
for behind that gruff exterior
was one of the kindest souls I've
ever known
The proverbial bright light in a
dark world
I wish I had taken more time to
come and say hi
To see how you were
To keep in touch
But instead, I kept telling myself,
"There's always tomorrow"
How those words haunt me,
for there is now no tomorrow
There is only yesterday, and I've let
yesterday slip right through my fingers
Today has arrived too quickly,
full of regrets
Yesterday is but a memory
Yesterday is gone forever
Your light now shines in a different place,
and until we meet again,
I'll say goodbye to you now,
yesterday's friend

Reason for writing:

Poem is for who could've been a very dear friend had I made more time for her..but she passed away in Dec 2000.
Pat..I'll see you when I get there!
