What Did You Say?

by Candece Cooper - Taurus

What did you say? I'm sorry, were you talking to me?
Did you open your mouth at a vague attempt to free your mind and actually speak?
Hold your head up, don't mumble. Be like a faucet child, just leak.
I'm sorry, did you call my name? Did you smile and laugh, or bow down in shame?
I think you're mistaken, maybe talking to someone else. Keep walking straight that way and call somebody else.
Are you looking at my brown skin, watching me put this book on the shelf?
What did you say? Gone head, speak your mind.
Expand a little, relax for awhile and rehearse this rhyme.
Did you say you don't know what to say, your thoughts were lost over time? Maybe you said you wanted to trade two nickels in just for my dime.
Uh huh, you said you like it, so let's do it again. Hold out your hand, cuz I think you just made a friend.
