MOTHERS BEST FRIEND
I picked you out,
Because I’d thought you’d be mine.
What I didn’t realize,
That you would be mother’s best friend.
We named you Buster,
But later called you Butter.
Sometimes I would tease you,
Call you Butter Ball.
You were the biggest cat,
That I’d seen out of all.
All through the years,
I would torment and tease you.
And you would run the other way!
Mother was always there for you,
Because you were mother’s best friend.
In due time,
I stopped harassing you.
You still didn’t get close to me,
Like I wanted you to be.
I thought maybe it was,
All the mean things I’d done.
But I realize now,
You were meant to be mother’s best friend.
Ten years went by,
And we thought everything was fine.
All of a sudden,
You were having breathing problems.
So mother and I,
Took you to your worst fear.
In walked the Vet,
And he looked you over.
He took some X-rays,
To figure out what was the matter.
Fifteen minutes later,
He told us the horror.
He said you were suffering,
From congestive heart failure.
He gave you a few medicines,
And then sent you home.
We put you in mom’s room,
For that was the place were you’d want to be.
You followed mother to the bathroom,
Because you didn’t want to be alone.
Then you walked into the kitchen,
Where I seen you fall down.
I screamed for mother,
I knew you wanted her there.
You got up and walked,
And took a few more steps.
But your back legs weren’t working,
And down you went.
Mother rushed to your side,
Where she talked and comforted you.
I just stood there,
And let the tears blind me from this fear!
Then a few seconds later,
We watched you leave our lives.
All you could hear was sobbing,
And the floor was nothing but a lake.
Mother just sat there crying,
Petting and telling you that you're her best friend.
It took me then to realize,
You two were meant to be best friends.
All through the years before,
I would often get mad.
I wanted you to be my best friend,
Like you and mother did.
But now I know, you two were destined to be.
I was always on the go,
And mother stayed at home.
So actually then,
Mother needed you the most.
So I see you had to be,
Mother’s best friend.
I know Butter now,
That that’s how it was suppose to be.
And even though,
We weren’t close like I wanted it to be.
I know no matter what I did,
You loved me, as much as you loved your best friend.
So I will miss you Butter Boy,
And mother will miss you too!
For you were meant to be,
My mother’s best friend!
