Cinders

by Mad Hatter - Capricorn

What is it that
you think you see
A vision of loveliness
tied to a tree
bound & tethered
for eternity

A fine haze of desire
burns your eyes
Rapture fills your senses
with overpowering delight
She is beyond approach
A delicate illusion
slipping beyond your feeble grasp
tonight

Hey, hey, is this what it feels
like to be in the circus
jump through the ring
on her finger
swing on that trapeze
try not to look down
have to please whatever crowd
anticipates your fall and hers
their faces all blurs
no more real than the tears
on your face
or the hope
that won’t linger

Somewhere else
in a life never lived
we would have been fine
that’s not now or then
how did I ever find my way
back here again
head spinning, heart beating
way too fast
rushing out of bed
for a dream that won’t last
all smoke and mirrors
leather pants & boots
& repressed sighs
flame at the ready
to burn a heart
to cinders
One more time.
