The Last Remaining Embers

I've sifted through the blackened scars
Waded through times of long ago
Patiently searched for a reddened ash
To bring back emotions I used to know.

I've colored myself with darkened soot
And drowned in blackness without air
To stumble from my search empty handed
Leaving my heart still shattered and bare.

I've cleansed my mind to clean my heart
But the darkness still travels within its chambers
Casting a shadow on a world once so bright
Snuffing out the last remaining embers.
