My Narcissus

by zara - Aries

Your love, and all your joy for life,
my Narcissus, you have taken,
it all away, beneath your touch,
another's heart is shaken,
by all the altruism there,
though they do not understand,
reflections of ourselves we sought,
that our inner-selves demand.
In you, Narcissus, myself I sought,
and duly did I find,
my soul does quicken every time,
I find one of my kind,
I was the lake that mirrored back,
your face, the same as mine,
Narcissus, dear, in someone else,
would the pond's reflection shine?
So as yourself, you recognised,
your being, in my heart,
you loved yourself within my arms,
we could not be told apart.
Until the time, Narcissus,
when my presence went amiss,
dissolved in yours, so lost within,
you could no longer feel my kiss.
So once absorbed, me into you,
and you at one with me,
you turned your golden face away,
as you could no longer see,
your reflection there, within myself,
though I could still see yours,
Narcissus, love, your nature true,
and truer to your course,
You'd found yourself, then fell in love,
I'd found myself in you,
and as all love of our kind must,
as all along we knew,
must dissipate, and soon be lost,
and turn to something new.
And so, Narcissus, now you know,
why you no longer find,
myself in you, different,
and you indeed, in kind.
The sameness that had once drawn in,
our interests as they burned,
amalgamated far too well,
and in short time were turned,
to outwards face, and start to search,
for someone else's eyes,
to reflect us back, a moment's peace,
before the vision dies.
And though at last,
we'd finally found,
in each other, there, reflection,
myself in you, and you in me,
we made no strong connection,
Unlike the myth, Narcissus,
you did not waste away,
my waters, though they fascinate,
could not keep you past a day.
And you did not affect,
the tidal pull of me,
unlike the myth, Narcissus,
one thing we did not see,
is that although we sought ourselves,
in each other's warm embrace,
discovered that our own true selves,
are the one thing we can't face.

Reason for writing:

this is an early attempt at a (semi) epic poem. I still think it has some good themes and would like to know what everyone thinks.
