The Genius

by Jesy Smith - Leo

A life spent studying, dreaming
wanting fame and recogintion
never realizing achievement and difference
classes and books enhancing the brain
ignoring life and love, and all in between

Time goes on and the seasons change
head down, pencil moving, all's the same
A single leaf falls and stunned eyes are cast upon it.
I fight myself to live and to breath
Tomorrow, I'll go out, and erase the shadows from my eyes
but today, I'l finsh my thesis, he desides

The years fly by and time grows old
Prizes and awards are all his eyes behold
"What a genius!", everyone said
Last night he died alone
strapped to his hospital bed

He sure did make an impact
He sure did make a difference
But his genius came with a price
Brillant thoughts in his head
he loved empty in his heart
If he could do it again, would he seek out the teacher of life?

Reason for writing:

I'm working on my first novel, and love to freelance with poetry when I need to take a break from "structed" writing. I was recently very much inspired and fasanated by the movie "A Beautiful Mind" and this poem is what came out of it. Any and all feedback more than welcome!!
