VALLEY OF THE KINGS 16 FEB 1923 It was stifling in the tomb; a hole opened which, Had guarded its secrets for three thousand years, Carter was amazed at the beautiful golden room. An underground passage led to a sealed door, Egyptian symbols of the dead engraved the floor. The Jackal headed God Anubis and the Eye of Ra, Looked on almost intimidating from afar. The seals were undisturbed maybe this was a Pharonic tomb? A window into the heart of the Egyptian sealed room. Lord Carnavon arrived in November when they found Tutankhamuns seal, The realization they had found a major Pharaoh was so unreal. Carter put an iron spike through the door, Then lit a candle its light bathed the floor. Animals, statues and lotus flowers, Piles of gold in breathtaking golden towers. A secret door guarded by statues lay just to the right, Was this where the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun lay sealed tight? Carter sledgehammers the small door into a slit, Pushing through was hard it was a tight fit. This was the tomb of a King dead for thirty-five centuries, I was amazed, And eager, stepping into the unknown I wasn’t fazed. Carter’s face smeared with dust went deadly pale, A golden sarcophagus came into view covered in a dusty Vail. Child like features on a regal face, A golden mask with jewel encrusted case. Lord Carnavon I think you’d better come and look at this… 16 Feb 1923
