The Place Was Filled With Phonebooks

by Elisa Hinson - Aquarius

I ran away
Once
After I had
Just turned fourteen
I spent four days
Shacked up
In an apartment
With two men
I knew only
By Midnight
And Black Panther
We ate spagetti
One night
And hot dogs
The next
And we'd drive
Around
From house to
House
And listen to
The search team
Over the CB
Matlock was checking
Over at Viper's
Bear was in tears
The police
Were checking out
The mall
And still they
Would find me
Nowhere
Finally the guys
Began to get
Worried
And I was starting
To miss
My shoes
So they dropped
Me off at my
Friend Sara's
And to this day
I have managed
To never tell
Anyone
Where I was
All that time
And nine years later
The mystery still
Has not died
Whenever my
Family gathers
Conversation often
Turns over to the
Past
And someone will
Always ask
Where did I go
And I always
Smile and say
I was there
The whole time
But I hate keeping
Secrets
All bottled up
Inside
So I thought
I'd share it
With you
Hope you don't
Mind
