4th Grade and Already Afraid of Death

by Vargas - Aquarius

I was like nine
or ten maybe
sitting in class
watching news
taking notes
about Saddam Housein
while I had my own war
going on

My last name started
with a "V"
alphabetical order
always allowed me
to be in
the back of the room
and my voice was never heard

Janice...
She was always
in the front
raising her hand
participating
while I often napped

Yeah...
She was evil
to the core
popular
when i wasn't
chatty
when i wasn't
cute
when I wasn't
and she had
a mean streak
that only I saw

While we walked
single file
silently
to the library
she kicked me
in the back
the laughing
and giggling
from the other children
made Mrs. Pascuzzo,
an old gray hair
hag of a teacher
turn around
to see what
was going down
she saw me
attacking her
so i got the blame
I tried explaining
that she started it
but she disregarded that

She brought me
back
to the classroom
alone
sat me in front
of her desk
told me that God
gives you stars
when you do
good deeds
and when you do bad
he never forgets
He sees all

You see,
when you die
and you wait
at the pearly gates
for your turn
to be judged
by God
to determine
whether you go to
heaven
or
hell
There'll be
behind him
a large T.V. screen
that displays
your life
as it was
showing all
that you've done
wrong
playing some scenes
in slow motion

God will see
the incident
between you
and Janice,
Do you want to be
embarrassed???

A little over
a decade
has passed
Mrs. Pascuzzo
is dead
and I wonder
if her theory
were true.
