something akin to hope

by elisa hinson - Libra

they are young
and small
and brown

and have not noticed

the minor differences
in them all

they are young
and small
and brown

and oblivious
to battles
overseas

they are young
and small
and brown

and line up on
the couch to translate
for mom
mapping out needs
and hopes and dreams

they are young
and small
and brown

and speak of
Barbie
and
Spiderman
and
Pakistan
and
Eid

they are young
and small
and brown

and i giggle
as they mingle
pondering tiny futures

a blending
of culture
of language
of belief

they are young
and small
and brown

and bouncing
11 different
languages
off my classroom
walls

they are young
and small
and brown

and none of them
have really noticed
the difference

in them at all
