All The Way Home

by elisa hinson - Libra

they spoke over us
like anxious fathers
on the first day
of school

Lanie here
has twenty hours
ahead of her

he said
patting her
back

as she buried her
head in his chest

see Lisa,
mine said...
14 don't seem
so bad now huh

and they were
there prompting
us to speak

as we stared
at each other
her eyes
blue mirrors

and we both
understood

to speak would
be to unleash
a torrent

so we stared
and made a silent
solemn vow

the kind you make
as children

such sorrow as this
being such a solitary
thing

with no way to explain

so we boarded
the train together

stood in the door
and waved goodbye
forcing out smiles
and idle chit chat

so they would find
comfort in our leaving

believing they had
left us
in the company of
a friend

then headed up the stairs
to our own seats
on opposites ends of
the train
