My Bloody Beach

by Will Read - Gemini

“Dump the bodies in the sea,
Just keep them all away from me”.
But the sea turned red, and then to grey.
The corpses wouldn’t go away.

A billion bodies – Maybe more,
Kept lapping up upon my shore.
Women. Men and children too.
Rictus cadavers, black and blue
Rolled upon my bloody beach,
Tragedy affixed to each.

Their hollow eyes accusing me.

“Why could you not have set us free?
Your silence is a shame on shame,
(You’re just) another corpse without a name.
Alive but not alive to speak.
A mute is not the one we seek.”

“Then what is it that you want from me?”
I shouted out, imploringly.

And then a billion corpses sighed
And woke me from my troubled ride.

Feverishly, I found a pen, began to write it down, and then...
I found that I had swiftly swept, the title of the work... We Slept.
